Wine Is Good For You!

In the 1990?s a news report, later titled the ?French Paradox?, was brought to the public eye after researchers discovered that the French who live on a diet of cheese, butter, organ meats, eggs and other cholesterol laden food had a lower rate of heart attack than in America. The results as to why this was so were very surprising to many: moderate and steady consumption of wine. How is wine good for your health?

Many believe red wine is better for you than white wine, because that is what early studies found. Skin from red grapes contained a powerful antioxidant called resveratrol, which was transferred into red wine during manufacturing. However, nowadays manufacturers are altering their winemaking processes for both red and white wine to boost health benefits.

Some of the more recent studies conducted from around the world have shown that wine can be a very powerful agent in helping prevent heart and lung problems and even strokes! In 2002 the American Thoracic Society found that the antioxidants from white wine helped improve lung function while in the same year the William Harvey Research Institute found that polyphenols in red grape skins helped keep arteries open and lowered the risk of strokes. University of California at Davis discovered in 1995 that coronary heart disease was reduced and research conducted in 2004 at the University of Ferrara in Italy showed that the elderly who consumed moderate amounts of wine had healthier blood vessels than those who didn?t.

Aside from these benefits there are many others specific to men or women. For men, in 2004, the Worcester Medical Center in Massachusetts found that wine helped lower the risk of a heart attack for men with high blood pressure. The Queensland Institute of Medical Research in Australia in 2004 found that women who consumed wine had a lower risk of ovarian cancer and the Twin Research and Genetic Epidemiology Unit, St. Thomas? Hospital in London discovered wine helped with stronger bones.

The key however is moderation. What is ?moderation?? Studies have said that ?moderation? is considered to be one or two glasses a day. Drinking more than this can be bad for your health and cause more diseases than prevent them. Wine does have a rather high calorie content which can put on the pounds if not consumed in moderation. But aside from just weight gain you risk far more serious health problems such as kidney and liver disease with over consumption.

So wine drinkers raise your glasses for a toast to the benefits of a glass a day!

A beer town like Portland can make a wine aficionado like myself feel a bit out of place at times. It seems as if beer is viewed as the average guy’s drink of choice, while wine is left to the realm of fine restaurants and dinner parties. People seem to find beer familiar and comforting, while wine is often considered to be mysterious and intimidating. I have no idea why this is, but after attending the Riedel wine event at Morton’s recently, I’m inclined to think at least part of the problem

Red Wine by Ch. Mont Redon from Cotes du Rhone, France - Rhone. Blend: 70% Grenache, 20% Cinsault, 10% Syrah The style of Chateau Mont-Redon Cotes-du-Rhone is one expressive of its terroir, and vinified to exhibit deep, clean, intense fruit, soft, balanced tannins and early approachability. Deep violet red in color, the wine shows aromas of dark berries and raspberries which are confirmed on the full, succulent palate. These are offset by slight grilled notes and nuances of licorice, which ca

Merlot Wine For Your Reading Pleasure

Beer, Wine and Your Bones

If you like the taste of a good brew, then here is some good news! In a recent research study of over 2,900 women and men, researchers found that beer, which contains silicon, may promote bone health. Silicon is a mineral that is thought to stimulate collagen production, which is a building block in bone formation. Wine is rich is phytochemicals, which may also benefit bones. Research does not show, however, in the battle of the sexes, that beer or wine has better or less results in either men or women. In a recent WebMD interview, Katherine Tucker, PhD says that it is possible that two glasses of wine could benefit men, while women may get a bone boost from two cans of beer. Another study of 2,847 people from the Framingham Osteoporosis Study found that men and pre-menopausal women who drank the most silicon, about 40 mg a day, had the highest bone mineral density, a measurement of bone health. Silicon is rarely listed on food labels, so it is hard to tell exactly how much you are consuming. But, you can estimate that one 12-ounce beer has approximately 7 mg of silicon.

It is important is that you drink any alcoholic beverage in moderation because while two cans of beer or two 6 ounce glasses of wine may be good for promoting bone growth, drinking more is harmful. The not-so-good news is that if you drink distilled beverages such as vodka or Scotch, daily consumption of these beverages has shown to actually promote osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is a bone-wasting disease that makes your bones brittle and more prone to breaks. The disease increases with age and is more common in women than men, especially postmenopausal women.

Drinking red wine has also shown to be linked to heart health. So, what we are seeing now is a diet that is good for the heart and another that is good for the bones. Because good nutrition is good for the heart, you can consider it good for the bones as well. Other studies have shown that good nutrition also plays a significant role in brain health.

So, how much beer or wine is good for your bones? Current recommendations are for two drinks a day for men and one drink a day for women. So, don't jump and run to a keg party quite yet, remember that moderation is best.

Now, if you are not a beer or wine drinker, don't start now just to promote bone growth. There are other ways to get silicon, and let us not forget that alcohol consumption raises other health risks such as osteoporosis itself. So, if you are interested in a healthier way to introduce silicon into your diet, you will want to eat dates, mangoes, melons, spinach, apples and even some bottled mineral waters will be good sources.

Wine Cellar Secrets: Elderton Barossa Merlot, 2005

Mon, 03 Mar 2008 18:38:49 PST
The 2005 Elderton Barossa Merlot is a ripping red and also good value. It's a full-bodied, rich and fully ripe, warm-climate style and is probably not a wine that will gain great complexity or subtlety with age, but it's delicious drunk while young.

Don't judge a wine on its label...

Thu, 13 Mar 2008 09:18:26 PDT
The Merlot is grown at Agios Pavlos which is close to the sea. This delicious Merlot brings the Greek Sun directly in your mouth! A big-boned bad-boy! A genuinely satisfying surprise: voluptuous and silky with bold fruit character.
